Verb Tenses

A. THE SIMPLE TENSES

1. Simple Present tense
a. Expresses events or situation that always, Usually, and habitually.
~ I take a bath everyday.
~ I study For three hours every night.
~ My Arabic classes begin at seven thirty in the morning.
b. True event or general statement of fact.
~ The sun rises in the east.
~ Water consists of hydrogen and oxygen.
~ The World is round.
c. Not used in the progressive tenses.
~ I don't know about him.
~ Where do you live?
~ He needs a book right now.

2. Simple Past Tense
a. When..... When.
~ Your classes began when I came back at school.
~ My mother cooked noodle when I did homework.
~ When she ate, we came at home.
b. Activity or situation began and ended time in the past.
~ I bought a new shoe in store shoe.
~ He lived in Jakarta for one year, but now he is living in Pangkalpinang.
~ I ate banana and apple in the last night.

3. Simple Future tense
a. Expresses in the future time
~ He will finish his homework tomorrow.
~ He is going to finish his homework tomorrow.
b. To express prediction.
~ According to the weather report, it will be rain tomorrow.
~ According to the weather report, it is going to be rain tomorrow.
c. To express a prior plan, only be going to.
~ I'm going to meet at 08.00 Am.
~ He is going to buy a car tomorrow.
d. To express Willingness.
~ I'll get phone.
~ He'll help you.

B. THE PROGRESSIVE TENSES

1. Present Progressive Tense
a. Expresses activity in progress at the moment of speaking.
~ George is eating right now.
~ John and Mary are dating in Saturday.
b. Activity, in generally progress this day, this week, this year.
~ She is writing English book this month.
~ I'm eating this afternoon.

2. Past Progressive Tense
a. Began was in progress when the other action occurred.
~ I was sleeping when it began to rain.
~ At seven o'clock last night, I was studying.
b. Used both parts sentence when two actions in progress simultaneously.
~ While I was studying, my roommate was having party.
c. Simple past same meaning of past progressive.
~ I ate this afternoon.
~ I am eating this afternoon.

3. Future Progressive tense
a. Expresses the time in the future.
~ I will begin to study at seven thirthy.
You will come at eight.
I will be studying when you come.

C. THE PERFECT TENSES

1. Present Perfect Tense
a. Expresses the idea that something happened or never happened before now.
~ I have never seen snow.
~ They have already seen that film.
b. Expresses the repetition of an activity before now.
~ I have written English book for the last one year.
~ I have met many people since I came here in February.
c. For or since.
~ I have been here since last tomorrow.
~ I have known him for two years.

2. Past Perfect Tense
a. Expresses an activity that was completed before another activity in the past.
~ My friend had already eaten by the time I got home.
~ I had ever heard about that.

3. Future Perfect Tense
a. Expresses an activity that will completed before another time in the future.
~ I will have finished my exercise by the time I go out on dinner tonight.

D. THE PERFECT PROGRESSIVE TENSES

1. Present Perfect Progressive Tense
a. Used to duration of activity began in the past and continues in the present.
~ I have been eating at restaurant for 20 minutes.
~ I have been here since two years.
b. Expresses general activity in progress recently.
~ I have been thinking about that.
~ You have been studying hard because final exams start next week.
c. Live,work,teach, between the two sentences when since or for in used.
~ I have lived here since 2011.
I have been living here since 2011.

2. Past Perfect Progressive Tense
a. Progress before another activity in the past.
~ He finally came at eight o'clock. I had been waiting him since seven-thirty.
b. Progress recent to another time in the past.
~ His eyes were red because she had been crying.

3. Future Perfect Progressive Tense
a. Progress before another time in the future.
b. Future perfect same meaning future perfect progressive tense.
